Book Review: Merrie England
Calling all my fellow England lovers and dreamers – this one’s for you!
Earlier this year, I read a delightful little book that made me even more excited to hopefully visit that country one day. I enjoyed reading Merrie England by Joseph Pearce (an acclaimed Catholic literature scholar who occasionally teaches at my alma mater!) so much that I had to put my own pen to paper to share about it . The ladies over at Blessed is She graciously published my piece on their blog: read it here!
An excerpt to whet your appetite:
“Pearce’s book encompasses an extensive and delightful itinerary; each chapter holds a new place and a new soul-filling grace…
Ultimately, Pearce concludes his wanderings at the shrine to Our Lady at Walsingham, showing that true joy can indeed be found in touring this country. Perhaps this is the answer to the country’s identity: it is “merrie” England because it is Mary’s England.”
